Mythbusting Normal Breathing. Identifying and Treating Inefficient Breathing Mechanics (PD-20903 - 1-day Preconference Course)
Mary P. Massery, PT, DPT, DSc
Have you ever felt that your patient’s poor breathing mechanics limited everything: posture, endurance, speech, health, function. Yet, you didn’t feel that you had the assessment tools and the treatment skills to effectively analyze breathing mechanics. And you didn’t know how to use handling skills and activities to change inefficient patterns even if you saw one. Well, now you will. In this pre-con course, you will have the opportunity with lab partners and lots of feedback from teaching assistants, to dive deep into assessing breathing patterns. You will then learn a variety of hands-on neuromotor retraining techniques specifically developed to modify inefficient breathing patterns. And finally, you will learn to combine those new breathing mechanics with functional activities from low level activities like rolling over to high level competitive sports. The goal is to learn how to combine optimal breathing mechanics with the patient’s unique activities to simultaneously improve respiratory health outcomes, postural alignment, and postural control. Three goals in one activity. That’s efficient. Trust me, you will leave feeling empowered to make an immediate difference with your patients’ breathing problems the next day in the clinic.
