Many pediatric physical therapists provide school-based physical therapy services. The expectation in this practice setting is that each physical therapist will have an understanding of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, and with several other federal laws that guide the delivery, in schools, of related services, supports, and accommodations to children with disabilities.
This purpose of this course is to guide participants in locating, understanding, and applying key federal and state laws, regulations, policies, practice guidelines, and service delivery models used by physical therapists in school-based settings. By focusing on the foundations of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), physical therapists who work as a school district employee or through a contract relationship with the district will gain important information and perspectives on eligibility, service delivery, development of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), and the role of physical therapy as a related service.
The course includes 4 self-directed learning modules, with narrated presentations and a post-test for each. It includes an instructor-led discussion board and 5 required synchronous virtual meetings for in-depth exploration of the course material and Q & As. Participants are expected to become members of a community of practice, with a desire to share resources, challenges, and successes while learning and applying course information using a discussion forum. The course instructor will provide participants with responses to questions, reading materials, and other resources to support ongoing learning during and following the course. In addition, knowledge-translation strategies will help learners implement new ideas into their school-based practice.
Overall Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this 4-module course and related activities, participants will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate the process used to search and find IDEA statutes and regulations at federal and state levels
  2. DescribetheprimarycomponentsofIDEAandeducationofchildrenwith disabilities in public schools
  3. Contrast eligibility for services and service delivery under IDEA and under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act
  4. ExplainthedevelopmentandimplementationofanIEPunderIDEA
  5. ApplykeyIDEAregulationsrelatedtothedeliveryofphysicaltherapyto
    eligible children in schools
  6. Describe a “reasonable accommodation” a PT could provide under Section 504
